Julie is Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, and Co-Director of Mentoring Training for the Indiana CTSI. She currently divides her time between academic emergency medicine, the dean’s office, programs for women, and mentoring initiatives.
Julie spent her undergraduate years at Butler University in Indianapolis studying chemistry and music. She completed medical school and an Emergency Medicine Residency at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she served as Chief Resident. After two years in community practice, Julie returned to the Methodist Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center as clinical faculty, which merged to become the Department of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM).
Julie's emergency medicine interests are diverse and include wilderness & travel medicine, medical ethics, and racing medicine. She worked for the Indianapolis Racing League (IRL) as a Safety Team physician, traveling around the world to care for the teams and drivers. Her lecture expertise includes Neurologic Emergencies, Travel Medicine, and Dysbarism: High Altitude and Diving Medicine. Her research areas have involved HBO in stroke, prevention of high altitude illness, and evidence based emergency medicine.
Women in Medicine
Julie is an advocate for women in medicine on campus and nationally. She researches and champions issues surrounding mentoring, work life policies, and women in academics. Since 2004, Julie has directed the Emergency Medicine Women's Mentoring Group which continues to grow and thrive. In her current roles as Co-Chair of the Women's Advisory Council at IUSM and the faculty advisor for the student branch of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), she works to advance programs for women. In addition, she serves on the SAEM Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine, AMWA's Gender Equity Taskforce, the IUPUI Women’s Advisory Council, and several other departmental and school committees. In 2010, she was recognized for her efforts as “Outstanding Woman Leader (Part-time Faculty)” at IUPUI.
In 2013, Julie completed a Faculty Fellowship in Mentoring and soon after became an Assistant Dean in the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development. Her focus has been to advance faculty mentoring and support programs for women faculty and trainees. She currently serves as the Co-Director of Mentoring Training for the Indiana CTSI, partnering with numerous programs on campus. For her continued commitment to mentorship, she was awarded the 2014 Mentorship Award from the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association.
