Dr. Josh Mugele was the first disaster medicine fellow at IU and helped develop the curriculum along with Chad Priest. Dr. Mugele is now the fellowship director along with Mr. Priest. Dr. Mugele attended medical school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor after a career in software development in the Silicon Valley. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at Indiana University and was also chief resident. For his capstone experience during his own disaster medicine fellowship, Dr. Mugele worked at JFK hospital in Monrovia, Liberia and was present during the start of the Ebola outbreak. Since then Dr. Mugele has been consulting with the Indiana State Department of Health, assisted in hospital disaster planning, and has presented at many local, national, and international conferences and published on ebola and disaster medicine. He is also an assistant residency program director at the IU emergency medicine residency.
