Heather grew up in a small town on the South side of Indianapolis as the oldest of four children to a teacher and microbiologist. It was during her childhood that Heather first dreamed of becoming a physician (and an astronaut) while leading her siblings through the bush on a mission to cure cancer inspired by “Medicine Man.” Though much of her life has changed since that time, the vision and values she developed as a child led her to take a leap of faith and pursue a career in medicine.
While in medical school, Heather developed an interest in underserved communities. This led her to volunteer with a local outreach clinic; it was here that she caught her first glimpse of emergency medicine. This passion was confirmed during her clerkship in emergency medicine where she saw all of her interests and loves in medicine unite. Emergency medicine allows you to be on the ground floor of making critical diagnoses. It was the combination of MacGyver and Sherlock Holmes that peaked her interest.
After marrying the love of her life, she moved to Detroit for residency at Henry Ford. While in residency they had two children, as the perfect start and finish to all of the hard work and dedication. Working with such incredible mentors and goliaths in the field at Henry Ford, inspired Heather to pursue her own love for medical education. It was this love that brought Heather full circle, back to the place of her childhood wonderment.
