An Indianapolis native, Deb completed her undergraduate degree at Purdue University in W. Lafayette, IN with a degree in Environmental Health and Toxicology. She defected to the other Indiana school and received her MD from Indiana University…but her heart remains loyal to the Purdue Boilermakers!
After graduation from medical school, she remained at IU and completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency. It was during the fourth and final year of that residency that Deb had the opportunity to do a month of Emergency Medicine at Methodist Hospital as an elective, and then that she began considering a change to the specialty of EM. Intentionally suppressing this new interest, she accepted a position with the IU School of Medicine as a Clinical Professor of IM/Peds and was the medical director for an inner city health clinic. During her 4 year employment at the clinic, she was a clinical preceptor for Med/Peds residents during their continuity clinics, and was an instructor for the Introduction to Clinical Medicine for first year medical students. She was awarded the Indiana University Trustee Teaching Award in 2002.
Deb finally admitted that she had missed her “true calling” to be an EM physician, and entered the IU EM residency. After serving as Chief Resident in 2006-07, she again accepted a position with the IU School of Medicine, this time as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine. She currently splits her clinical duties at Wishard Memorial Hospital ED, and James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children ED.
