About me

Carey grew up in Northern VA in a suburb of Washington DC.  He attended Washington and Lee University (1976) on an Army ROTC scholarship, and then the Medical College of Virginia (1980).  He graduated from his Emergency Medicine Residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in 1983. 

From 1983-85 he served as the director of emergency services at the US Army community hospital in Nurnberg, Germany. In 1985 -1989 he served as the Residency Director at the Joint Military Medical Command- Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. He has been the Residency Director at Methodist /Indiana University since 1989. This makes him the longest serving EM program director in the nation (1985 - current). National activities include multiple Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Committees/Task Forces. From 1995-1997 he served as the President of CORD, and received their Impact Award in 1998.
From 2004-2005 he served as the President of SAEM and completed an 8 -year service on their BOD in 2006. Most recently he chaired the SAEM Institute of Medicine (IOM) Task Force, charged with addressing issues raised in the IOM report "The Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System". Dr. Chisholm served as a Special Site Surveyor for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee-Emergency Medicine (ACGME RRC-EM), and was a member of their Special Appeals Panel for over 15 years. He has been a past member of the Board of Directors for both the Government Services and the Indiana State chapters of ACEP. Dr. Chisholm is an editorial reviewer for the Annals of Emergency Medicine, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine and Academic Emergency Medicine, where he has served as an Associate Editor since 1998. He has served as an item writer for the American Board of Emergency Medicine In-Training examination (1988-1996), an oral examiner for ABEM (1989 - 2000) and SAEM's representative to the Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine Task Force in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011. In March 2002 he received the "Program Director of the Year" award from the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). In 2007 he received an ACGME Parker J Palmer "Courage to Teach" Award. In 2008 he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.  In 2010 he received the Hal Jayne Academic Excellence Award from SAEM. Dr Chisholm's research/special interests include wound and pain management, medical education and the practice components of EM that contribute to medical error.  Locally he currently serves on the IUSM Student Promotions Committee and on the Professionalism Competency workgroup.  He also serves a senior member of the SAEM Residency Consultation Service.

From 1990 - 2006 he and his wife (Robin) sponsored 9 foreign exchange students from Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Australia  for 1 - 6 years duration in addition to their own 2 daughters.  He enjoys kayaking, photography, running, scuba diving, college basketball/lacrosse, gardening and cooking.
