Undergraduate: Brigham Young University, Provo, UT Medical School: University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, AZ Professional Interests: All-comer ED with high peds volume, possibly splitting my time between peds and adult EDs. Currently leaning towards teaching hospital, but will consider all options. Hobbies: Running, hiking, camping, playing with my kids, reading (currently in remission), learning new things Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: Everything! Great faculty and residents, great city, incredible training. Random fact: I'm fluent in Russian (Not too useful in Indiana :))

Mary Ella Kenefake, MD, BA

Undergraduate Augustana College, Rock Island, IL Medical School: Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University, North Chicago, IL Professional Interests: Advocacy, Critical Care Hobbies: music, shopping, good food, wine and spending time with my family and friends - which usually ties in the good food and wine Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: Enjoyable/fun work environment - great residents and faculty. You can't beat the variety of learning and experience between both Wishard and Methodist Random fact: Voted "most likely to have her own talk show" in college. I also used to be a swimmer, singer, and waitress before my time in medicine.

Luke Espelund, M.D.

Undergraduate: Northwestern College, Orange City, IA Medical School: University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City, IA Professional Interests: Pediatric Trauma, International Medicine and Patient Advocacy. Hobbies: Volunteering, reading, traveling, intramural sports, listening to live music, cooking, biking, and holding babies. Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: The staff are passionate about taking exceptional care of patients and teaching residents to do the same. In addition, they serve as outstanding personal and professional mentors. Random fact: Prior to moving to Indiana for residency, I had lived my entire life in Iowa, but was born in Minnesota and conceived in Nebraska.

 

Sarah Terez Malka, M.D.

Undergraduate: University of Maryland, College Park Medical School: Ben Gurion Medical School for International Health in Collaboration with Columbia University (Beer Sheva, Israel) Professional Interests: Wilderness, travel, and expedition medicine; International Health; Cultural Competency; Advocacy. Hobbies: Anything outdoors, especially involving rivers or mountains; running; yoga; theater, dance, and music. Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: Everything! Diverse patient population; supportive, enthusiastic faculty; great learning atmosphere; opportunities to pursue multiple sub-interests within emergency medicine and pediatrics; and fantastic co-residents. Random fact: I majored in musical theater in college and was once a nationally ranked whitewater kayaker. Within the past five years, I've spent time in over 15 countries on five different continents.

 

Sean Thompson, M.D.

Professional Interests: Pediatric emergency medicine, global health, social and economic development. Hobbies: Cooking, eating, traveling, reading, (trying to play) keyboard and bass, time with friends and family, volunteering. Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: Amazing training in both EM and Peds, friendly and service-oriented medical community. Random fact: When I eat chocolate my face flushes and my voice pitches up slightly.

 

Bethany Beard, MD

Undergraduate: Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana Medical School: Indiana University, Indianapolis, Indiana Professional Interests: all things peds and EM, intensive care, nutrition, advocacy Hobbies: trail running, spending time with my husband, family, and dog, gardening, boating, cooking and trying new foods, acoustic music, celebrity gossip Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: an opportunity to learn from the outstanding staff and residents who fearlessly care for 200,000 patients a year in both academic emergency departments. Random fact: I sold sweet corn with my family in our front yard every summer between the ages of five and twenty five.

Brian Phillips, MD

Undergraduate: University of Maryland, Baltimore County Medical School: University of Maryland Professional interests: International Medicine, Education (teaching clinical Pediatric EM) Hobbies: Cooking, Grilling, Live Music, Mountain Biking Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: Awesome training in both the Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics programs and the opportunity to practice in three high volume Emergency Departments with staff that love to teach. Indianapolis is also a much cooler city than I would have ever thought! Random fact: I'm an aspiring Mariachi guitarist.

 

Matt Swarm, MD

Undergraduate: Indiana University, Bloomington, IN Medical School: Indiana University School of Medicine Professional interests: Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric EMS, Event Medicine, Medical Education, and Nutrition Hobbies: Spending time on the lake, College Basketball (go Hoosiers!), International Soccer, Personal Fitness, Nutrition/Cooking/Eating, International Travel, Live Music, Touring Local Breweries and Distilleries Favorite thing about practicing Emergency Medicine at Indiana: The EM program at Indiana is a true family. Each member of the IU family is wholeheartedly invested in your education and professional growth. Also, the opportunity to train as both an EM physician and pediatrician under the guidance of two very well respected programs is unique and challenging. Random fact: I plan on opening a Tiki Bar in the Caribbean once I become financially stable.
