To provide a robust prehospital EMS educational experience for fellows that prepares them to become leaders in the field of EMS

About us

The IUSM Out of Hospital Care fellowship is designed to provide the fellow with an in-depth educational experience in prehospital medicine that will prepare him/her to provide medical direction for a large, busy EMS system.  Our one-year curriculum looks to immerse the learner in all aspects of prehospital medicine in order to produce a well-rounded, knowledgeable EMS physician.  This curriculum is based on the Core Content of EMS medicine and is fully accredited by the ACGME.

Curriculum

The IUSM EMS fellowship curriculum provides a longitudinal approach to the various aspects of prehospital care.

The fellow is to take an active role in the various prehospital arenas covered by the Division of Out of Hospital Care.  The fellow is fully integrated into the leadership team of the following EMS agencies. 

  • Indianapolis EMS. The largest urban EMS agency in Indiana serving over 1.2million citizens. 
  • Indianapolis Fire Department. This offers the EMS fellow an opportunity to learn about fire based EMS as well as special operations EMS. 
  • Wayne Township Fire Department. The EMS fellow will serve as the primary medical director for Wayne Twp. This site allows the fellow to gain more experience with suburban and rural EMS. 

Tactical EMS
The fellow will gain experience of tactical EMS through participation with the IMPD Tactical Unit

Aeromedical
The fellow will gain a basic understanding of aeromedical operations through participation with Lifeline aeromedical service.

Motorsports Medicine (optional) 
The fellow will have the opportunity to learn more about motorsports medicine.  He/she will be able to work in the infield care center at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for all events.  He/She will also have the opportunity to gain a more in-depth knowledge of motorsports medicine by training with the Phillips Safety Team.


Disaster Medicine
The fellow will be required to gain a more in-depth awareness of Disaster Management through participation in the Marion County MESH Coalition as well as by participating in various disaster medicine drills throughout the city of Indianapolis


Mass Gathering Medicine
The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in the medical planning and response for the follow
massgathering.jpging events.

  • Indianapolis 500. The largest mass gathering event in Indianapolis.  Over 350,000 spectators with a multitude of events
  • One America Mini Marathon. The largest mini marathon in the United States.  Over 35,000 runners.  The fellow will be involved in the medical planning and response. NIMS

Fellowship Book Club and Journal Club

  • The fellow will meet with the IUSOM EMS Division leadership to go over monthly-required readings from EMS texts and other pertinent sources. 
  • The fellow must organize 4 Journal Club sessions during the academic year

Clinical Duties

The EMS fellow will work a total of 6 clinical shifts per month at Eskanazi Memorial Hospital, one of the 3 primary teaching sites for the IUSM Department of Emergency Medicine.  The fellow will be responsible for direct supervision and clinical teaching of the EM residents, medical students, and other rotators in the department. 

  • The fellow is responsible for ensuring that his/her clinical duties do not interfere with his/her required fellowship responsibilities. 
  • All scheduling will be done through the assigned departmental representative
  • Any additional clinical time must not violate duty hour limits as set forth by the RRC
