Division of Toxicology
Medical Toxicology is composed of:
- Clinical service via in-hospital acute care, outpatient occupational clinic, and medical backup for the Indiana Poison Center
- Education via an ACGME-accredited Medical Toxicology fellowship and a busy resident rotation
- Research both clinical and basic science
- Community service such as Fire Department Hazmat advisory and community disaster planning
Our Division is active in community, resident, student, and medical staff education. A Medical Toxicology rotation is available to medical students and housestaff. We also support an inpatient clinical toxicology consult service at Methodist Hospital, Wishard Memorial Hospital, Indiana University, and Riley Children’s Hospital. The toxicology service was founded by Dr Furbee in April 1992 and currently sees approximately 500 patients a year. Six board-certified medical toxicologists run the service. Dr Furbee serves as Division leader.
The inpatient toxicology service is unique in the state, and one of only a few in the country. Emergency Medicine residents spend one month on the toxicology service during the R1 year.
