Division of Out of Hospital Care

The Division of Out of Hospital Medicine provides Emergency Medicine residents with opportunities to experience all facets of out-of-hospital emergency medical care, including Medical Directorship, Tactical EMS, Mass Gathering Medicine, Motor Sports Medicine, the Federal Emergency Medical Services for Children Program and Disaster Response.

The Division provides Tactical EMS support to the SWAT Teams of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana State Police, and the Indianapolis office of the FBI.  It is fully integrated into Mass Gathering events and provides spectator emergency medical coverage for all events at the new Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indianapolis Convention Center, ranging from Colts games (and the upcoming 2012 Superbowl) to rock concerts and motorcross races, all events held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (including the Indianapolis 500, the NASCAR Brickyard 400, and the new Moto-GP race), and the largest ½ marathon in the country with over 35,000 runners. There are opportunities for those interested in Motor Sports Medicine through the events held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, including a special Motor Sports Elective every May. Residents are active in the USAR IN Task Force 1 and have gone on deployments to the Atlanta Olympic Games, a grain elevator explosion in Kansas, New York City “ground zero:” after the 911 tragedy and Hurricane Katrina.  Finally, there are ample opportunities to gain experience in traditional urban, suburban and rural EMS ground and aeromedical care systems.

Residents participate in the formal didactic and clinical teaching of prehospital providers and provide in-service lectures to the many prehospital agencies that we sponsor. All emergency medicine residents participate in structured EMS activities during their “Triple Threat” Month.  During this month, they ride as observers on Indianapolis EMS ambulances and fire first-response apparatus; spend time in the 911 dispatch center; and attend administrative, operational, and quality improvement meetings with the EMS medical directors. Through these activities our residents gain an appreciation and understanding of how EMS systems operate.

Residents wishing to gain more expertise in Out of Hospital Medicine may elect to participate in the Out of Hospital Academic Track. This scholarly track serves residents who are committed to developing the unique skill set which enables them to participate more fully in EMS endeavors in a community, academic, and/or administrative setting after completing the residency.
