Mission
The mission of the Women in Emergency Medicine Group is to provide a supportive environment for the personal and professional development of women in emergency medicine (EM.) Our primary focus is to initiate and cultivate mentoring relationships between EM women faculty, residents, medical students, spouses, and alumni.
Goals:
- To provide mentors & role models for inspiration and guidance
- To offer career advice in establishing goals, networking, and recognizing doors to opportunities
- To promote work life balance
- To provide emotional support, facilitate insight, & offer paths to sustain personal enrichment
- To address the challenges of gender bias
- To encourage participation in activities for women in academics on the IUPUI and IUSM campuses
- To recognize and nominate qualified women for honors and awards
Structure:
Meet on a monthly basis in a relaxed environment to fellowship and discuss a topic pertinent to women in medicine. At most meetings, we welcome spouses, children and guests.
Meeting topics include:
- Work-life policies for women (maternity leave, lactation policies, childcare, flexible work arrangements)
- Defining success
- The mommy tenure track
- Balancing a family and physician career
- Time management skills
- Career opportunities and obstacles
- Networking skills
- Gender discrimination in the workplace – legal guidance and advice
- Measuring your life stressors
- Negotiating skills for women
