Academic Faculty
The faculty constitutes the 3rd critical pillar in a successful EM residency (along with the patient population and the curriculum plan). At IU, we are particularly proud of our talented and involved faculty.
First, you learn your specialty from working right alongside of our faculty, 24-7. You staff almost all of your cases with them, not with an upper level resident (who may or may not be an interested/capable educator, and certainly who lacks the experiential database so key to the successful practice of EM).
But doesn’t this decrease your ability to develop a sense of autonomy? Absolutely not. Instead, our faculty are able to modify their interaction to your needs. You are challenged to make decisions, and then compare those with the faculty’s recommendations. For instance, as an upper level resident a rather straightforward case can be changed by the faculty playing the “what if” game with you. For instance, “What would you do differently if you were working at a hospital who didn’t have that consultant available?” or “How would you approach this differently if this was a 2 year old rather than a 20 year old?”. Because all of us care for children and adults, we can think longitudinally across all ages, drawing parallels in approach as well as teaching about subtle differences. Almost 50% of the faculty have worked 1 or more years in a community ED setting, allowing us to discuss limitations in diagnostic testing, consultants, other team members such as social workers and hospital politics that are taken for granted in the training institution (or simply discussing transfer issues).
Our faculty represent all expertise niches within our broad specialty, and additionally have long-standing involvement and leadership roles locally and nationally. Although our academic department is just over 10 years old, we have an established research track record, to include 2 NIH funded researchers. A glance at our department’s recent bibliographies will provide a snapshot of our efforts in the science of discovery, application and dissemination. These provide “value-added” in perspectives and networking opportunities for our residents.
Please feel free to scan the bios provided for our faculty. They are here due to their commitment and expertise as teachers, educators and scientists. Within this group, we are certain that you will find many mentors, role models and even friends.
